What Makes a Great Plot Twist?
A good twist makes us want to go back to page one. A bad one makes us feel tricked. The difference is rarely about how shocking the reveal is; it is about what the reveal does to everything that came before.
Surprising and inevitable
The strongest twists recast what we have already read. Details that seemed incidental turn out to be essential. The reader thinks, of course, and immediately wants to reread.
Foundations before fireworks
A twist needs groundwork: clues laid honestly, characters whose behaviour makes sense in hindsight. Without that, a reveal feels arbitrary. The same fairness that keeps readers hooked in a good mystery applies here.
It should matter emotionally
A clever reveal that changes nothing for the characters is a trick. A reveal that alters a relationship, a belief, or a choice becomes part of the story’s heart.
