Why Some Stories Stay With Us
You finish a book, close the cover, and it is still there the next morning. Other books, equally well written, are gone by the weekend. What accounts for the difference?
Emotional truth outlasts plot
We forget the sequence of events long before we forget how a story made us feel. Books that stay with us usually land on something true about fear, love, loss, or hope, even inside an invented world.
Unresolved echoes
An ending that answers the central question but leaves a small resonance behind gives the mind something to return to. This is different from an ending that is simply vague: the story feels complete, yet a little of it keeps moving.
The reader is part of it
A story also stays because of who we were when we read it. The same book can mean something different at twenty and at forty. Part of a story’s afterlife happens in the reader.
